Looking For Donkey Milk Soap? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know

You’re scrolling, and there it is: donkey milk soap. Maybe you paused because it sounds a little odd, or because you’ve heard people swear by it and you’re not sure whether that’s real or just a good label.

That’s a fair thing to wonder about. Donkey milk has a long history in skincare, and there’s a genuine reason it keeps showing up. But the useful question isn’t whether it’s trendy. It’s what the bar actually is, what you can reasonably expect from it, and whether it suits your skin.

Here are 10 things worth knowing before you buy.

1. Donkey milk soap is soap made with donkey milk

Like other milk soaps, donkey milk soap is a cleansing bar made with donkey milk as part of its formula. It’s still soap. It’s there to wash your skin, not to replace your moisturizer or do the work of a treatment.

The rest of the recipe matters just as much. Oils, cleansing ingredients, fragrance and everything else in the bar shape how it feels in your hands and on your skin. Donkey milk is one part of the picture, which is why two bars with the same milk can feel completely different.

Ours is the one people in the shops tend to do a double take at, mostly because we named it Calm Your Ass Down. The name is a joke. The bar is a real, handcrafted milk soap.

2. Donkey milk is traditionally valued in skincare

Donkey milk has a long-standing reputation in beauty traditions, and it’s usually described as gentle and nutrient-rich. Researchers have looked at its components and possible skincare uses, and that interest is part of why the ingredient has stuck around for so long.

What that reputation can’t tell you is how a rinse-off bar will behave on your skin. Studies on milk and creams aren’t the same as a trial of a finished soap, so treat the tradition as interesting context rather than a promise. A 2023 review looked at donkey milk in laboratory and animal models, not at a commercial bar in your shower.

3. Donkey milk soap and goat milk soap aren’t interchangeable

Both are milk-based soap options, and neither one wins by default. Brands like to highlight what makes their milk special, but your experience will come down to the full recipe and your own skin.

So look past the animal on the label. Read the ingredient list, notice whether there’s fragrance, and think about how your skin usually reacts to a bar soap. A well-made goat milk bar could suit you better than a donkey milk one, or the other way around. That’s not a flaw in either. It’s just how skin works.

4. Sensitive skin deserves a closer look at the full formula

A bar being called gentle or natural doesn’t mean it will agree with every sensitive-skin routine. Fragrance and other ingredients can bother some people, and a bar that feels lovely to your best friend might not suit you at all.

Read the full ingredient list before you buy, particularly if you already know you react to certain things. If your skin is very reactive, try a small patch first, and stop using the bar if it stings or itches. For anything persistent, or a diagnosed condition, a dermatologist is the right person to ask about which cleanser fits your routine.

5. Dry skin may need more than a cleansing bar

Donkey milk soap can be a genuinely nice part of your routine, but no soap replaces moisturizer. Cleansing bars leave some people feeling dry, especially if you wash often, love a hot shower, or already run dry.

So pay attention right after you towel off. If your skin feels tight, use the bar a little less often, or just on the areas that need it, and follow with a body butter or oil while your skin is still damp. If a bar consistently leaves you uncomfortable, that’s your answer. It isn’t the bar for you.

6. Handmade doesn’t mean you should skip the ingredient list

A handmade bar can be a lovely, small-batch alternative to mass-produced soap. But handmade doesn’t mean you should skip the label. The ingredient list is still your best guide to what’s actually in the product.

Look for a clear list, and check it against anything you know your skin dislikes. We make our products by hand in small batches here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and every bar is made in D’Iberville. Our donkey milk soap page lists the ingredients for that bar, so you can read them before you decide.

7. Let your bar dry between uses

A bar that sits in a puddle will soften and disappear on you fast. Keep yours on a draining soap dish, or anywhere water can run off, and let air reach it between washes. It stays firmer and lasts noticeably longer.

If you share a bathroom, tuck it somewhere it won’t catch a constant splash. It’s the smallest change, and it’s the one people thank us for most in store.

8. Use it gently, especially if your skin is dry or sensitive

Wet the bar and your skin, work up a light lather in your hands, and cleanse without going at it hard. Rinse with lukewarm water, then check in with how your skin feels.

You don’t need a washcloth or an exfoliating tool every single time. If your skin runs dry, keep the routine simple and moisturize after washing. “Natural” and “milk-based” are nice words, but they’re never a reason to push through discomfort.

9. Pair your soap with the rest of your routine, not every product at once

A cleanser is only one part of the picture. If your skin feels dry after bathing, a body moisturizer is usually a more useful next step than adding another cleanser or a scrub.

This is where we get a little excited, because it’s the combination that makes the difference. Start with the Velvet Body Butter on damp skin, add a Glowing Sugar Scrub once or twice a week, and bring in a foaming bath whip for the nights you want the whole ritual.

Our body butter, scrub and foaming bath whip mix and match is 2 for $44, 3 for $63, or 5 for $100, and the discount applies at checkout. Same advice as the soap: read each product’s details and pick what feels right for you.

10. Choose realistic claims and buy from a maker you can ask

Be wary of any bar that promises to cure a skin condition, erase wrinkles or work for every skin type. The best reason to try one is that you like the formula, the format and the way it feels. Not a big claim printed on the wrapper.

We make handcrafted products in small batches in D’Iberville, Mississippi, and the soap is one of those things people like to pick up and sniff before committing. So come see it in person. Our flagship is in downtown Bay St. Louis, and we also have shops in downtown Ocean Springs and in D’Iberville. Ask us anything while you’re in there. We’d rather answer a real question than sell you a promise.

The takeaway: donkey milk soap is a milk-based cleansing bar with a long tradition behind it, but the milk alone can’t tell you how a bar will feel on your skin. Check the full formula, use it gently, and let your own skin weigh in.

When you’re ready, browse the donkey milk soap online, or come say hello in Bay St. Louis, Ocean Springs or D’Iberville. Bring your questions. We love those.
